Back in 2018, then-President Trump was criticized by the press for attending a NATO summit and calling out its members to their faces.
For context: Trump was not happy that Germany and other NATO nations were about to sign a new oil/gas deal with Russia. NATO was created as an alliance against the Soviet Union.
“It’s very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where [NATO is] supposed to be guarding against Russia, and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia. So we’re protecting Germany, we’re protecting France, we’re protecting all of these countries, and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia, where they’re paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia… and I think that’s very inappropriate.”
Fast forward to today: Germany and other NATO nations’ reliance on Russian energy has put them in a very dangerous position, as Russia invades Ukraine.
